Thermal Development Manager

The Thermal Development Manager will lead a team in the Commercial function, ensuring the successful development of key thermal projects in our development pipeline. The role will focus on the commercial development phase of the projects (CCGT/OCGT), securing a route to market and driving the projects to financial close. The successful candidate will oversee the development strategy and contract negotiation for the projects, manage joint venture activities and relationships, ensure governance and reporting requirements are achieved, and help deliver on the organisation’s strategy.

Our thermal projects form a key part of our diversified portfolio and involve significant scale and complexity, requiring a skilled and experienced manager with excellent commercial acumen and significant experience negotiating and managing large commercial projects.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Drive the commercial development of the thermal projects in our pipeline, ensuring robust and comprehensive programmes for delivery. Monitor and control project development performance across all dimensions – time, cost, quality, scope, and risk. Oversee participation in Capacity Remuneration Mechanism auctions and ensure comprehensive bid preparation programmes and governance requirements are met.

  • Manage contractual negotiations to ensure optimum outcomes for the business and ensure timely completion and execution of contracts and agreements to meet the company’s strategy and objectives. Liaise and work internally with the legal department to drive contractual workstreams to successful conclusion.

  • Monitor development and capital expenditure against budgets and forecasts, ensuring efficient use of resources and timely identification of variances. Ensure alignment between project delivery schedules, resource needs, and procurement strategies.

  • Liaise and work internally with the wider Market Investment, Finance, and Engineering teams to ensure robust investment cases for the thermal projects. Collaborate with colleagues to update the long-term financial and strategic plan for the company and ensure coordinated efforts in achieving business objectives. Collaborate with colleagues in the Planning team to achieve the necessary consents and licenses for the projects.

  • Mentor and develop a team of project management and technology professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and high performance. Lead cross-departmental projects and initiatives to drive alignment and achieve business goals.

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and professional development within the team to enhance expertise.

Identify, understand, and apply all Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements as a fundamental element of any construction design or undertaking, ensuring safety of employees and members of the public during construction, testing, commissioning, and operation.

  • Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s, objectives.

Requirements:

  • A third-level degree in Engineering, Business, Project Management, or a related discipline

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline such as Engineering, Management, or Commercial (advantageous)

  • Minimum 10 years in energy or large-scale infrastructure projects, with a proven track record managing large-scale projects

  • Strong technical understanding of how the electricity transmission grid is planned, developed, and operated

  • Familiarity with regulatory, grid, and planning frameworks relevant to energy infrastructure in Ireland is essential

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage stakeholder relationships, and deliver projects in complex, multi-stakeholder settings

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with key stakeholders and regulatory bodies

  • Professional project management certification (e.g., PMP or equivalent) is desirable

  • Strong commercial acumen and experience in budget control, procurement, contract management and negotiation, and resource optimisation

  • Highly adaptable and innovative, with strong problem-solving ability

  • Experience within sectors such as Renewable Energy, Power Generation, Technology, or Grid Infrastructure
